Subject: A heap of clotted nonsense
Subject: A heap of clotted nonsense
1. Disclaimer - I have not read this work - not many people today have the stomach, let alone the patience, to wade through a sea of humanist Latin only
...
to find (according to the article on the author in Wikipedia) some of the most crazy statements on etymology ever penned. How did the man get away with this? It's comforting to know that quite a few of his contemporaries were neither fooled nor impressed.
2. Plantin - the great printer who lived and worked in Antwerp where one can still visit his home and printing office, was one of his friends and therefore agreed to print this, and that is perhaps its only value: To have left us a specimen of his superb printing skills. Both typography and page design are exquisitely well done. Too bad about the content.
